SPOONS, Spoons and more Spoons!

Hello, all my Lovelies!

I wanted to tell you all about spoons. Yeah, not the kind you eat with..lol

So what do I mean then? I'm talking about the "Spoon Theory" sillies.

The Spoon Theory is a metaphorical way to measure or explain the amount of reduced energy you have to carry out daily mental, physical and social tasks, and activities due to Disability, Chronic Illness, and fatigue.

Well, why a spoon you ask? A spoon is a visual representation of the unit measurement of how much energy you have throughout the day. Each task of everyday living takes a certain number of spoons to carry out. The number will "reset" as you rest and recharge. Fatigue is a big factor in life with Chronic Illness. This method is used to give people an idea of the amount of thought and planning a disabled person has to do to conserve their energy. The theory is used as a tool to educate "healthy" people who aren't concerned with expending energy on regular ordinary tasks such as eating, bathing or getting dressed on how to empathize with the chronically ill.

The term "Spoonie" is widely used in the Autoimmune, chronically ill and disability communities amongst the disableds that use the spoon theory to explain their disabilities.

The Spoon Theory was created by Christine Miserandino in 2003 in her essay "The Spoon Theory"

The essay was a discussion between Christine and a friend about what having Lupus is like, where Christine used spoons from a nearby table to visually help her explanation.

I just wanted to give you a little insight, a little visual on energy and Chronic Illness. It is a tough thing to go through daily.

-Stay Lovely.
